We completed a full roof replacement in Irondequoit, and this project was a great example of how proper preparation and quality materials make all the difference in protecting a home for decades to come.
When we first arrived, the existing roof had clearly reached the end of its lifespan. There were two layers of asphalt shingles installed over the years, and beneath them was an original layer of cedar shake. While cedar shake can be a durable roofing material, layering multiple roofing systems over time can add excessive weight and hide potential structural issues. To ensure long-term protection against harsh New York winters, we installed six feet of ice and water shield along the eaves. By extending the shield six feet up the roof, we provided enhanced protection beyond the minimum standard, giving the homeowner extra peace of mind.
Next, we installed a premium synthetic underlayment across the remainder of the roof deck. Compared to traditional felt paper, synthetic underlayment offers superior durability, better tear resistance, and improved moisture protection. It creates a strong secondary barrier that protects the home even before the shingles are applied.
For the finished surface, the homeowner chose Owens Corning Onyx Black shingles. This bold, modern color provides a striking contrast and significantly boosts curb appeal. Owens Corning shingles are known for their durability, wind resistance, and long-term performance. The Onyx Black color gave the home a sharp, clean look that immediately stood out in the neighborhood.
Proper ventilation is just as important as the shingles themselves, so we installed an Owens Corning ridge vent system along the peak of the roof. Ridge ventilation allows hot air to escape from the attic, helping regulate temperature and moisture levels year-round. To complete the look, we installed matching Owens Corning cap shingles, creating a seamless and professional finish along the ridgelines.
One of the most detailed parts of this project was the chimney area. The old flashing had deteriorated and was no longer providing adequate protection. We custom fabricated and installed brand-new chimney flashing, precisely fitted to the brickwork. Proper chimney flashing is critical in preventing leaks, as this is one of the most common failure points on any roof. By custom-making the flashing, we ensured a tight, watertight seal built to last.
In the end, this roof replacement not only improved the home’s appearance but also significantly upgraded its protection against the elements. With a full tear-off, enhanced ice and water protection, premium underlayment, high-quality shingles, proper ventilation, and custom chimney flashing, this homeowner now has a roofing system built for durability, performance, and long-term reliability.
